Orchard Audio

Succasunna, New Jersey's Orchard Audio didn't come to play. Joined by Kimber Kable and Soundfield Audio, Orchard got down to business, but quick. "We are an audio company that provides an immersive listening experience by offering top-quality DACs, streamers, and amplifiers," its website states.

The system included Orchard Audio owner/designer Leonid Ayzenshtat's PecanPi+ Streamer Premium ($1500) and Soundfield Audio 1212C active speakers ($16,000/pair). Kimber Kable Hero XLR interconnects ($562/pair), Kimber Kable speaker cables, and Kimber Kable PK10 Ascent power cables ($710/ea.) directed the juice.

Eight speaker models are shown on Soundfield Audio's website, but not the 1212Cs, which debuted at the show. This large speaker stands 13" wide by 46" high by 11" deep. It is said to reach down to 27Hz, –3dB. A wide-dispersion planar supertweeter is positioned atop a 12" neodymium coaxial point-source main driver with ring radiator. Two 12" GRS internal subwoofers are powered by a 1200W plate amplifier. DSP is onboard for "tuning and crossover management."

Of all things, Orchard played a rip of the Sheffield Drum Record, featuring solo performances by Jim Keltner and Elvis's tub-basher Ron Tutt. I have the record, but somehow this was different. Keltner played with more fire, panache, and personality than I recalled. The system framed the drums in a vast, deep, see-through stage as the assorted drums and cymbals burst across with speed and vibrancy.
