Tony Minasian brought his handsome Oriaco loudspeakers and his own CDs recorded with top players as sources. "We don't manufacture speakers; we craft instruments of acoustic truth," Minasian states at his Oriaco Audio website. "Our dedication to perfection demands complete oversight of the creative process, which is why we design and manufacture our own drivers, modify existing drivers to our standards, hand-select premium components for crossovers and cabinets, and employ proprietary measurement systems that push the boundaries of precision engineering."
The Burbank, California–made, bass-reflex Oriaco D6 standmount ($4500/pair) stands 15" high by 9.5" wide by 11" deep, runs at 91dB/W/m sensitivity and 8 ohms nominal impedance, with a reported frequency range of 57Hz–30kHz. A 1" SB Acoustics soft-dome tweeter set in a shallow horn is mounted on top of the cabinet, with a 1" Lavoce soft-dome tweeter stationed at the front baffle. The 6" full-range driver is made by Fostex further down.
The system included a Technics SA-C100 Premium Class Network CD Receiver ($1199), Oriaco Speaker Cables ($900/pair), and an Oriaco Power Cable ($500). Bedding used as damping and cardboard boxes as stands provided a homey touch.
As a kit-banger myself, I was happy to see Minasian's various self-recorded CDs, all featuring percussionist Brad Dutz. The CDs include such evocative titles as Random Excitement, Driving Nowhere, Isolation, and Drums and Bells: Comparing Sticks. This system offered precise, dry, small images with an excellent sense of vibrancy and punch. Music was hyper-detailed, fast, and airy, with percussion bolting around the room like lightning. I bet these speakers would sing with a good tube amplifier.
