Legacy Audio

Springfield, Illionois–based Legacy Audio, which is under new ownership, promised a "Total HiFi Experience" at the "Legacy Audio Showcase." They weren't kidding. Creating three rooms out of a single lower-level chamber plus a larger, special-purpose room, Legacy Audio provided a different listening experience around each corner.

Room one was dubbed The Aeris XD System, showcasing Legacy Audio's Aeris XD loudspeaker ($36,000/pair), driven by the iV2 Ultra amplifier ($6000), augmented by twin Metro XD subwoofers ($4000 each). Processing and room correction were handled by the Wavelet 2 Processor ($8000).

The 4.5-way hybrid dipole Aeris XD loudspeaker features Legacy's Dual Air Motion Tweeter (AMT) system, an 8" titanium-coated midrange, driver and dual 12" subwoofers powered by 1400W of internal amplification. It is said to offer bass extension to 18Hz.

The two-channel iV2 Ultra amplifier uses ICEedge® technology and delivers 1000Wpc into 4 ohms.

Legacy's Metro XD subwoofers feature a 12" driver and a 15" passive radiator; they're powered by a 750W internal amplifier.

The Wavelet 2 Processor acts as DAC, preamplifier, and four-way digital crossover. It provides speaker and room resonance correction "to ensure perfect timing and tonal balance," said a press release.

Finally, an Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition streamer ($1399) streamed music using dual ES9038Q2M DACs, a large touchscreen, and a low-noise power supply.

The total cost of this system: $59,399.

Rooms two and three were variations on the theme.

Room two was labeled the Focus XD system; it featured the Focus XD ($20,500/pair), a four-way, six-driver active tower featuring dual 12" "ultralinear" woofers powered by 700W of internal amplification. It also used Legacy's Dual AMT tweeter system and dual 7" Graphene-filled midrange drivers. The Focus XD is specced at 18Hz–30kHz.

The Wavelet 2 Processor and Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition streamer were also used in this room, for a total system price of $29,899.

Room three offered the Signature XD system, featuring Legacy's Signature XD tower ($17,500/pair), an active four-way, five-driver system in a compact tower. It uses dual 10" woofers driven by 700W of internal power paired with a 7" Graphene-filled midrange and the Dual AMT tweeter.

The reliable Wavelet 2 Processor and Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition streamer handled processing. Total cost Room 3: $26,899.

Finally, the Film Festival Room served as the theater for T.H.E. Film Festival at the Hilton with the Flagship Valor System. This gleefully overstuffed hall of sound included the massive Valor speakers in Sapele Pommele Natural Satin ($100,000/pair). The Valors were aided by the Wavelet 2 Processor ($8000), which provided room correction, time alignment, and optimization for the driver array.

Legacy's Element center channel speaker ($17,500) is a four-way, seven-driver design with its own 1500W of internal amplification. The center-channel was joined by two Goliath subwoofers ($14,500 each) featuring dual 15" drivers and dual 15" passive radiators, the former powered by 1400W of internal amplification. A Wavelaunch Processor ($2000) was used to integrate the surround and rear channels with the main system, providing EQ and time alignment.

There's more!

Signature SE Side ($14,500/pair) is a four-way, five-driver sealed-box tower, featuring dual 10" woofers and the Dual AMT tweeter system. Signature SE Rear ($14,500/pair) and a second pair of Signature SE speakers completed the rear sound field.

An iV8 amplifier ($10,000) produced 610Wpc into 8 ohms for the surround and rear speakers, and a Marantz AV8805A processor acted as a central hub for the theater.

Total cost for this ultimate home theater system: $195,500.

All cables in all rooms were provided by Kimber Kable.

I only made it to rooms one and two, and I wasn't fond of the shiny, happy pop music being played, but Legacy Audio's typically large-scale, forceful, linear, and relaxing sound was more than impressive; it was like a volcano boiling up from the ground.
