Vinh Vu, my first friend in this audiophile thing, has been a busy bee since we met in the 1990s. With his company Gingko Audio, he's marketed his unique isolation platform, Danacable, and the Sextet Modular Speaker System, among other products that have stood the test of time.
Vu's latest idea is of the DIY variety. His MooVu Speaker Kit ($499 plus cabinet cost) consists of four custom 6.5" woofers, two 1" soft-dome tweeters, two crossover boards, OFC copper wirings, and instructions. Cabinets in Redwood, Jujube Wood, and Brown Maple are sold separately by Iwistao Minimart for $350/pair, delivered.
"For audiophiles who may not want to tackle DIY installations, we offer completely assembled MooVu speakers for $2495/pair, in the same three finishes (Redwood, Jujube Wood, and Brown Maple)." That's from the website.
Vu's new speakers are striking and at the price, hard to beat.
Vu's system comprised a Holo Audio Cyan 2 DAC ($1428), and Salk StreamPlayer ($1895), into a Fosi BT20A Pro (Bluetooth to phone) ($99) and Musical Fidelity A1 integrated amp ($1800). A Core Power Tech Equi=Core 600 ($1295), Danacable RCA Interconnects ($699/pair), Danacable USB cable ($599) and "generic" speaker cables and power cord completed the setup.
For a total cost of $9500 the sound of this DIY system sounded surprisingly good. Playing Pedro Diaz's English horn performance of "Cor Anglais" music sounded true, pure, and full. It was easy to relax into the sound, which was warm and woolly, and possessed excellent tone and body.
