I have dozens of LP's purchased since the late fifties but still tend to listen mostly to CD's.
Last week's vote question about vinyl prompted a landslide of votes. Which impels us to ask, what is the ratio of CDs to LPs that you own?
I enjoy the sound of CD and vinyl on my system. Unfortunately my old Sota table is sounding a little rough and the vacuum hold-down never worked from the day I got it. Looks like it may be time to upgrade my table. Or do I take the plunge for SACD? Hmmm.
The vast majority of music over the past 10+ years has only been available on CD. I tend to purchase at least a couple of CD's per week, so my collection has slowly been tipped toward the digital medium. Given more of a choice I would have much more vinyl.
It is my opinion that the compact disc was made for slobs who couldn't take care of their vinyl equipment. While it is true I have heard very good recordings on cd,for the most part it is a hit and miss proposition. Which I can't and won't afford.I will just keep playing and buying my friends record collections until the powers that be get the cd right.
Dissatisfaction with CD reissues of my LP collection drove me to buy a table just to listen to my older music. I discovered that analog possesses a much more 'organic' sound for lack of a better term. It really smokes my CD collection. Somewhat of a bittersweet surprise. The music is fantastic, the prices unreal, the cleaning a necessary evil and only vegging half as long somewhat disappointing. Why don't the labels come out with a Super LP! SLP! At only 3 feet across, it will make the days of getting up a thing of the past! Hmm, maybe not.
It is 50-50 right now but not be for long. Hey, there are garage sales every week - at a buck a pop! So, more vinyl to come. I no longer purchase CD's and don't intend to since I am pretty ticked at the shenanigans of the recording industry. (Just might relent, however, if SACD takes off). Kurt Christie Guelph, ON
