While it may seem like a bit of chaos with online and brick and mortar vendors, I think these changes are smart for the industry. And I do believe the high end audio market needs to offer discounts as the landscape has changed and expectations are much different that they were 30 years ago.
As an audiophile, I perhaps don't need the assistance from a local dealer, but I also love the local dealer for the regular events they host (coffee talks, mfg demos and seminars). Their unique offerings also may not be found at another online retailer or local dealer.
But truthfully, I need more incentive to work with the local dealer, as 25% off of a given component is far too great for a poor audio and vinyl junkie like myself. If I was earning comfortably, cost would not be an issue. I do understand the value the dealer brings to equation and I have never show-roomed in my life. There has to be a happy medium somewhere.
