PS Audio UltraLink D/A processor Robert Harley's 1992 System

Sidebar 1: Robert Harley's 1992 System

The UltraLink took center stage in my digital front end during the past month, driven by either the Theta Data transport or Nakamichi 1000mb (reviewed in this issue). I used primarily the AT&T ST-type glass interface (an Aural Symphonics Aural Optical glass cable), although coaxial digital interconnects were also auditioned. The playback system included the usual retinue of components: Audio Research LS2 line stage, VTL 225W/A> monoblocks, Hales System Two Signatures, and a Muse Model 18 subwoofer. Interconnects were Expressive Technologies IC-1 or AudioQuest Diamond (processors to preamp) and AudioQuest Lapis (preamp to active subwoofer). Loudspeaker cables were 8" bi-wired runs of AudioQuest Sterling/Midnight.

I also auditioned the UltraLink's balanced outputs with a Krell KBL line stage and Threshold S/550e power amplifier. The entire system was thus balanced, from processor to power amplifier. Although such a wholesale change in the playback system must be approached with caution by a reviewer, it nevertheless allowed me to compare the UltraLink's balanced and unbalanced outputs. Other digital processors on hand for comparison included the Mark Levinson No.30, Kinergetics KCD-55 Ultra, Nakamichi 1000p, and Theta's new DS Pro Generation III.—Robert Harley

The PS Audio truncates data with bit depths greater than 16 so is not competitive with modern DACs.
