We were bummed out when we heard that Steve Gritzan was closing down his wonderful and dusty record shop,
Iris Records, in downtown Jersey City, but heartened in knowing that he’d continue to sell albums at street fairs and at his outstanding Brooklyn Record Riot conventions.
“Steve,” I had asked him, “why’s it always gotta be in Brooklyn, though? Why not Jersey City?”
Steve had been wondering the same thing. And I’m now happy to report that the first Jersey City Record Riot will take place this Saturday, June 5, from 10am to 5pm at
Parlay Studios (161 2nd Street), just a short walk from the Grove Street PATH station, and just a short walk from my home! This is going to be great. I am stoked.
And now a message from Steve:
Locals used to suggest that Jersey City would truly “arrive” when Starbucks finally opened up for business at Grove Street (check), when more good restaurants thrived (check), perhaps when trendy vintage stores took hold (check). But those folks were only partially right: Jersey City has now hit the big time with the arrival of the Jersey City Record/CD Riot, a full-blown music collector’s extravaganza. Hosted by the same Record Riot folks who sponsor the infamous Brooklyn Record Riot, the show takes place Saturday June 5th at Parlay Studios, 161 2nd Street in downtown JC, just a short walk from the Grove Street PATH. Over 30 dealers from NY/NJ/CT and beyond (Quebec, for example) will descend with a wonderful variety of musical wares: rock, soul, jazz, country, hip-hop, and more. There will be vinyl for sale or trade (of course), full-length albums, 45s, compact discs (CDs), other musical memorabilia. Chat and make new friends with other musically-inclined folk, or even think about selling your own stuff at our next show. Show hours are from 10am to 5pm and admission is $3 ($10 at 8am for early admission). Refreshments will be available. See you at the show, boys and girls.
