Better This Way

Rega’s outstanding P3-24 turntable is available in lots of fun colors, and even though I do love my white P3, I still suffer from color envy. I want a green one, a blue one, an orange one, a pink one. I would like a different P3 for every day of the week, a P3 for my every mood. I wonder if the different colors have different sonic properties. For instance, does my white P3 sound purer than a black P3? Are certain colors better suited to certain types of music? Blue for the blues?

P3 owner Brian Willey is seeing red. He writes:

Stephen: I don't know how you feel about the heavy metal, I know it is a dicey affair. But as indicated in the attached picture, I would have to say that metal should always be listened to on blood red vinyl, played on a lipstick red turntable. With black accents. It's just better this way, really...

Brian makes a compelling argument. I am sure he is correct. I have obviously been missing something, listening to bands like Boris and Grails on a white turntable.

Doomsdayer's Holiday on a white P3? That’s just totally paradoxical. If anything, Doomsdayer's Holiday rides a demon pigosaurus. See?

As it turns out, Brian knows a thing or two about good music. First of all, he directed me to Nadja’s excellent album, Touched.

Nadja, described on its Myspace page as "violent make-out music," features Aidan Baker on guitars, electronics, drums, and vocals, and Leah Buckareff on vocals and bass. I had heard some of Baker’s other stuff, but wasn’t very impressed&#151his side on Colorful Disturbances, the recent 12” split with Noveller, for instance, just didn’t do it for me. (The Noveller side is great!) Touched, however, is different. Touched feels well-conceived. Touched is heavy, powerful, and lovely. Listen at Alien8 Recordings. But be careful: Your speakers might melt.

In addition, Brian makes good music. He plays in an Austin-based band called The Black Drumset. Interesting and exciting drum patterns are matched with thoughtful, pulsating electronics, and melodies that rise and fall easily. You can listen to a few of The Black Drumset’s songs here. But for best results, listen on a black Rega P3.
