A Seat Worth Fighting For: Joseph Audio, Doshi, and the Studer A810
Jeff Joseph's room is the hottest ticket at every show. Securing a seat is a yearly battle, driven by the sheer, undeniable magic of his and Nick Doshi's reel-to-reel system.
This year at FLAX was no different. The room’s system consisted of a Studer A810 reel-to-reel with extended response heads, Doshi Evolution Series Tape Preamplifier ($22,000), Doshi Evolution Series Line Preamplifier ($22,000), and Doshi Evolution Series Monoblock amplifiers ($45,000/pair), driving Joseph Audio Pearl Graphene Ultras ($52,000/pair).
Digital got its due via an Aurender N30SA media server 8TB ($25,000), Berkeley Audio Design Alpha USB 2 reclocking digital audio interface ($2495), and a Berkeley Audio Design Reference 3 DAC ($28,000). Cardas Audio Clear Beyond cables connected the components.
Listening to beautiful reproductions of Elvis, The Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan, and Ray Brown, the interior life of each recording was laid bare. Each was expressed in engrossing detail, ultimate refinement, and impactful resolution, reflected in the relaxed body shapes of the room’s visitors. Next year, I will bring my own chair.
