Inside Box Number One

Inside Box Number One: Sumiko’s new Okki Nokki record cleaning machine ($549)!

We are currently putting together the January 2011 issue of Stereophile. (That’s Volume 34 Number 1!) The January 2011 issue is especially exciting for me because it includes the first installment of our new monthly column, “The Entry Level,” in which I’ll attempt to uncover really excellent, affordably priced hi-fi components and explore how and why we become audiophiles. It should be fun.

While at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, we introduced the idea to several equipment manufacturers and dealers, and all seemed very excited about it.

In the first installment of “The Entry Level,” I offer an introduction, set some goals and expectations, and attempt to start a conversation. In the February issue, I think I’ll discuss the dismantling of my current system in favor of a much less expensive system, going back to my roots in a way, though perhaps not all the way back. So, I’ve requested a few review samples, and over the past few days, I’ve been receiving an unusual amount of mail. Each day brings another box. Or three.

Box Number Two: A pair of brand new Wharfedale 10.1 loudspeakers ($349).

Box Number Three: The 24Wpc Icon-2 desktop amplifier from NuForce ($349).

Box Number Four: Music Hall’s scratch-ready, vinyl-digitizing USB-1 turntable ($299).

Box Number Five: Audioengine’s sweet little A5 active loudspeakers ($349).

And my favorite box of all, Box Number Six: Rega’s new RP-1 turntable in brilliant titanium finish ($449).

Also on the way are products from TTWeights Audio, Audience AV, Black Cat Cables, Head-Direct, Klipsch, NHT, Silver Circle Audio, and possibly a couple others. I’ll have lots to share.

If there are any components you think I should listen to, please let me know. (I'm all ears.)
