dCS: Two New Reasons to Listen

The Munich unveiling of dCS’s Lina DAC X network music player ($15,500) drew significant attention from lovers of the Lina DAC ($14,400). The debut occurred alongside a static display of the top-of-the-line Varèse transport, due in June.

The DAC X includes a new physical volume dial, IR remote control, support for high-resolution streaming via Qobuz Connect, the option to connect CD/SACD transports, and a larger, standard-width chassis machined from solid billet aluminum. For those who prefer the appearance of the original Lina three-box DAC, headphone amplifier, and Master Clock, the smaller Lina DAC remains in production.

dCS's Emron Mangelson explained that the Lina DAC X's larger chassis allows better isolation of the power supply, resulting in improved performance. While there was no opportunity to perform a sonic comparison, the system's sound was so lovely as to suggest that whoever at Stereophile ends up evaluating the Lina DAC X is in for a major treat.

Doing the honors in the room, with distinction: VTL MB-450 Series III Signature monoblocks, a pair of Wilson Audio WATT/Puppies with matching LōKē subwoofers, and Nordost Valhalla 2 cabling.
