The Composer as Smartass

Brahms loved making jokes. "And if a good one doesn't occur to me, then [I'll make] a bad one."

Funny you should remark about Brahms and jokes. He apparently didn't suffer fools well either. Last evening I was reading some liner notes after listening to his First Symphony. They included a reference to a comment made to Brahms to the effect that it was strange how much the C Major theme in his finale resembled the theme of Joy in Beethoven's Ninth. Brahms replied," ""Indeed"," and it is even stranger that every jackass hears it at once."" Gotta like a guy like that.
