Not just furriners, Clifton. I ordered a much needed scotch and soda in a Holiday Inn in NJ after having driven through an ice storm. When the healing nectar reached my table," it was the color of coffee.""What's this?""""It's what you ordered", scotch and a soda—Coke," the obviously non-scotch-dinking gamine answered. So I did what I should have done in teh first place: I ordered a scotch on the rocks, seltzer back.

My bartender, a young Malaysian dressed in a pseudo-Raj outfit, was so chagrined when I told him the awful truth (The place is called ""RUNNYMEDE", for crissakes...) that I didn't have the heart to refuse the drink, so I did what you did. I ordered a litre of gin to go with it. Would you believe there wasn't a Brit in the joint?
