Girl Genius

Girl Genius

I wasted—er, enjoyably spent—the weekend reading Phil and Kaja Foglio's Girl Genius online. Now I've ordered the printed books, and I recommend you do the same. Here's a taste of the Oz meeets steampunk comic. Order all six volumes—or spend the next three days online. At which point, you'll order all six volumes anyway, so save a step.

Islam & Science

Islam & Science

Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy gives us a fascinating overview of Islam's long and variable engagement with science. "The question I want to pose—perhaps as much to myself as to anyone else—is this: With well over a billion Muslims and extensive material resources, why is the Islamic world disengaged from science and the process of creating new knowledge?"

Cartridge vs. Turntable

Alright, guys. This is a LONG way off, but I'm thinking about how I will invest my money in analog when I do finally have the means. I'm already set on Rega, so no TT recommendations, if you please, but I'd like to know what you think is more important; Is it the turntable/tonearm or the cartridge?

I'll share with you my specific thoughts, and you can let me know what you think.

Option 1:

Rega P2 ($495), glass platter ($70), Dynavector 10x5 ($380)

Total: $945
(Note: I've not included the negligible price of a Rega VTA shim)

Option 2:

Recommend a low-budget receiver

Hi, first post. I'm not a stereophile, but I'm hoping to get some good advice from those who are.

I have always had low budget stereo gear. About a year ago, I inherited a pair of B&W DM3000 speakers. They're probably a little big for my current apartment but I hope to keep them for a good long while, including a bigger space. Very nice speakers.

A few days ago, my Kenwood receiver stopped powering up (won't come out of "standby" mode). It's an 80 watt per channel, two channel receiver that's probably 12-15 years old. (Kenwood KR-A4060).

Mi Bomba

Mi Bomba

It's a good thing I did my listening before the Mets' tragic loss because, afterwards, everything sounded horrible. I started with the brilliant Arsenio Rodriguez composition, "A Bailar Mi Bomba," off of Roberto Roena's outstanding Lucky 7. When I listen to this song, my head bobs about like mad and my shoulders shake like maracas, I come up with desperate ideas about trading in my guitar amplifier for a conga set and a cowbell, I consider saying goodbye to everything and moving away to Puerto Rico. It's that kind of song.

Tone controls

I'm realy happy with my system but very sometimes I like to compensate bad recordings. I was thinking of a Quad/Luxman "tilt" with some filters in my tape lus (do you use a tape in and out?) but a can't find such a device on the market. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Carl
