New Werd!

Since there are, at this time, 888 threads in the general rants and raves area, I thought that this lucky number required a bit of internet self reflection. Which can be part and parcel of this hopefully humorous problem.

Now for the word, which will henceforth become part of the lexicon of the internet forums, as humor does get around the world quite fast.

We will have to define it properly, so it stands a chance. I will start with some obvious variations.

Classical music for vinyl collectors

Searching the net for some obscure recordings, I stumbled across this appropriately named Canadian site: http://www.mikrokosmos.com/index.html.

It's a site that sells used LPs and 78s, with some of the titles looking quite tempting. The full catalog is a 66 page, single-spaced Word document with nearly 4000 titles for March.

I'm not a vinyl guy, but this may help nudge me toward getting a cheap turntable.

Ohms...?

OK, I'm a NOOB, sorry...I have a Denon AVR-2808CI (110 Watts per ch) and am awaiting the arrival of my Monitor Audio Silver 5.1 system. All the MA speakers are rated at 6 Ohms; the fronts are RS6's (Sensitivity (1W@1M): 91 dB; Nominal Impedance: 6 Ohms; Power Handling (RMS): 120 W; Recm'd Amp (RMS): 40 - 120 W). The outputs on the back of the Denon are listed as 6 Ohms, except when using A + B (bi-amping) for the fronts, which says 8 Ohms. I asked Denon about this and the reply was that bi-amping 6 Ohm speakers may cause the unit to shut-down and/or damage it.

Is Steely Dan Worth It?

Steely Dan's playing at the Beacon in New York. Chances are I'd be paying the low price ticket for those pretty crappy balcony seats at the Beacon (which I've been at before, and its kinda tough to enjoy a concert from there). I know they tour rarely, and I consider myself pretty into their music. My question is, is it worth the $154 for a better seat or even the $75 for the mediocre seat or is their live show not that good? This is more looking for a general opinion on their shows since I've never seen one. Even if I don't end up going, I'd like to know how they are live.

MusicDirect and American Express: Perfect Together

Jason Victor Serinus reported on it a couple of weeks ago, but in case you still haven't seen that American Express ad featuring hi-fi retailer MusicDirect</a>, here it is.

Chain Stores Dumping CDs?

So, I get these email coupons from Borders & Barnes & Noble. And it's not so infrequent that Borders would send 40% off on single CD coupons. Not so much B&N. But a couple days ago, they sent this coupon: 40% off on all CDs, not only on single, but multi-discs. Plus whatever discount that was on an item still applies. Fire sale anyone? I couldn't refuse so went to the Lincoln Ctr B&N where they actually have a decent stock of classical CDs, spent like $280 on CDs, but feel slightly better thinking that retail, it would have cost me more than half a grand.
