Listening #81

Listening #81

For an artform in which sound is everything, popular music has been blessed with strangely little poetry: There may be no other genre where high-mindedness falls with such a thud. Leonard Cohen remains the most striking exception, not just for the genuine seriousness of his music or the adulation of his audience, but for the ability of the former to survive the latter.

New to the forum - looking for advice/help

Hey guys, I am hoping that you may be able to offer me some advice and possibly direction.

I am looking to upgrade my speakers in a system that serves double duty (2-channel/home theater)

I currently have a Rotel RSX-1057 driving 4 NHT SuperZeros, a SuperCenter with a NHT SW2Pi sub.

While it is a dual use system, I would prefer to focus on creating a system that I will love to listen to music on and be happy with for surround sound/HT.

Let me describe my current setup in detail and try to articulate what I do not like about it.

Filling in the missing bass

For the first time ever I'm setting up a dedicated listening room. Previously, speaker location/listening location was pretty much dictated by the room. Now I have a lot more freedom in placement but have a question about how to do so. RealTraps has a set of tones available on their web site in 10Hz steps from 10-300Hz. When playing them back the first time with the way I initially placed the speakers/listening position I found that in general, the tones between 50Hz and 110Hz were way down in volume compared to those above and below that range. Not equally down but down just the same.

Alright... I need some examples of amazing cinematography/videography..

Ornette at Lincoln Center

Ornette at Lincoln Center

Ornette Coleman shuffled onto the stage of Jazz At Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater Saturday night, and that was remarkable enough. JALC, Wynton Marsalis’ house of jazz, is typed as a conservative institution—to some, the antithesis of the music’s inherently progressive nature—yet here was the quintessential avant-gardist, making his debut appearance in the lavish concert hall on the opening night of its 2009-10 season.

The sixth annual Rocky Mountain Audio Fest is about to get underway at the end of this week. Scheduled to take place October 2–4, at the Denver Marriott Tech Center, the largest high-end audio show in the US that's open to the public will offer 150 exhibit rooms packed with products from 479 companies. Despite the economic slowdown, at least 3500 audiophiles, the same number as last year, are expected to attend.
