Gainsbourg

He was at the same time an incredible wordsmith and an incredible musician
He was also raffine, an esthete, which can surprise some
His small house rue de Verneuil in St Germain des Pres had as much art work as Yves St Laurent
Too much is made of Brigitte Bardot who sang badly, not enough credit given to Jane Birkin. The French were gaga over Birkin
Beside Je t'aime and Histoire de Melody Nelson I particularly like
Je suis venu te dire
La Decadance
Yesterday yes a day (Madame Claude movie)
Ex-fan des sixties
Ballade de Johnny Jane
Aux enfants de la chance

The Focals and the Simaudio

It seems that when the 150 Wpc Simaudio amp drove the Focal Maestro Utopias, there was an effective compression (limiting) of the macrodynamics. JA writes that the Focals "didn't offer the unrestricted dynamics I expected" and that "orchestral climaxes just didn't climax as much as I wished.." The 600 Wpc Classe amps fared better.

Live as Canned, Reproduced as True

In this month's "As We See It," Jason Victor Serinus writes, "There are times when high-end audio can actually sound better, and move us more, than the in-person experience."

Do you agree? Have there been times when a live performance failed to match the experience of listening to the same piece of work at home? In what ways can your stereo provide a better experience than a live music event?

New power inlet on subwoofer

Just mounted a IEC (C14) panel mounted male inlet on my subwwofer instead of the skinny lamp cord the manufacturer mounted.

This way I can decide which external power cable to connect. For now I use a computer cable, but when I have the money I will invest in a much better power cable like the ones I use for my AMP and CDP.

Now On Newsstands: Stereophile, Vol.33 No.7

The July 2010 issue of Stereophile is now on newsstands. It had been far too long since we received a letter complaining about our love of reviewing insanely expensive products, so we decided to make this our “Special Aspirations Issue,” featuring, almost exclusively, products you’d have to be CEO of BP to afford.

Jazz Awards, 2009-10

Jazz Awards, 2009-10

The Jazz Journalists Association held its 2010 awards bash at City Winery, a warm, spacious eatery (with an excellent wine list) in the SoHo section of New York this evening. Below are most of the winners, followed by the musicians for whom I cast my ballot. The awards covered the period from April 15, 2009, to April 15, 2010.

Parasound CDP-1000

Is anyone familiar with this nineties CD player? On a whim, I bought one cheap off E-Bay the other day to use as a transport with my Parasound DAC-1100. I thought it would be kinda cool to have a matched pair. I seem to remember them being for sale back in the early nineties but can't recall how well received they were.

Any audiophiles with DJ experience?

An audio buddy and I agreed to "DJ" the kids' school's end of year dance. We borrowed some gear and bought a small mixer and had fun....almost.

Turns out, the school had been paying, like, 500-750 bucks for DJ's to come and do the thing each time, so we decided that with the savings to the school, it would be fun to keep doing it for them for free.

Question is...there's a helluva lot of gear out there!

Anybody who likes Hi Fi have a handle on this category of product?

I went and read about the Mackie HD1531 as a reference point.
