CES 2011: Easy Registration, Challenging Assignment

The Consumer Electronics Association made the final step of registration, badge-holder pick-up, easier for CES attendees this year. In addition to registration sites at the Venetian, Las Vegas Convention Center, and a number of hotels, a registration booth was set up in the baggage claim area of Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport. The line may have been 25-people deep when I approached on Wednesday around noon, but it moved quickly.

Heading Into Las Vegas

Heading Into Las Vegas

It's Wednesday evening just before rush hour, and the traffic is not too bad passing through the outskirts of LV along Interstate 15 heading north. The rest of the Stereophile crew will be arriving during the next few hours and Thursday.

John Atkinson has handed out the assignments:

John Atkinson: expensive speakers
Robert Deutsch: low-mid-priced speakers
Erick Lichte: amplification of all kinds
Jason Serinus: cables, accessories, and headphones
Stephen Mejias: budget gear of all kinds
Jon Iverson: digital products of all kinds

We'll gather tonight at JA's favorite Indian restaurant for dinner, and then coverage will start up in earnest Thursday.

Which Loudspeaker?????

Hello, I'm a novice in the HIFI's world and in this forum too. At first, sorry for my english, i'm from spain.
I have a question to do but i cant find nobody to answer...i want you to help me because i have a PC for the listening of my music and i will buy an ASUS XONAR ESSENCE STX for a better audio but i don't know what type of loudspeaker i would have to buy to optimize that sound card. Now, I have a Sennheisser HD485 and ALTEC LANSING VS 2621 2.1 (http://international.alteclansing.com/spain/vs2621-pc-computer-speakers.html).....I wait for you responses. MANY MANY THANKS¡¡

The Pioneer DVD-V7400: A "Giant Killer" Transport and the Best Kept Secret In Digital Audio.

I have spent the better half of the last four months searching for a replacement CD transport. We previously had a Japanese market Technics SL-P999 which was wonderful but was in need of replacement. I searched high and low for something which not only would be an improvement but would be a BIG improvement. Not only did I find it but I have to let everyone else know about it.

People still don't seem to "get it" do they?

I have been reading Stereophile since 1992. Back then I was a broke 17 year old high school student living at my family's apartment. Could I afford ANYTHING in the magazine? No. Not at all. Could I convince my mother to buy a $2,000 CD player? Never in a million years. Could I convince myself that I needed to own something like this when I grew older? OF COURSE!

Shatki stones in Computer audio?

I bought a Shakti stone long ago when the world was young as an experiment. Parked on my old Jolida amp, it toned down an errant bit of grit in the highs. On my Prima Luna amp it did nothing I could hear. On my Emotiva amp it seemed to add grain (???).

As this thing is supposed to eat stray RFI, and as the computer is one of the noisiest things on the planet, might not these devices cut down on a computers RFI?

If so, how would that translate to the computers audio signal and where would be the best place to set the thing?

needle question - calling mr. fremer

my analog brothers:

i am trying to decide if the time has come for a retip or replacement of my cartridge. it is a benz woodbody low output. it is probably 4 years old with 800 hours. this became an issue recently when i purchased a record that had been billed as excellent condition. it sounded fuzzy and distorted even after cleaning. other records sounded alright though. then i tried to play a piano solo record on christmas eve and had to take it off due to the distortion.
