DVD-A and Dolby TrueHD

Hi all,

I recently had an extended conversation with my neighbor, who works at Dolby Labs here in San Francisco.

In the course of our discussion, I took my usual opportunity to bemoan the decline of DVD-A. He informed me that their Dolby TrueHD offering is based on MLP Lossless - also the core of DVD-A technology - and has been further enhanced with better data rates and channel options.

Thus, it now seems DVD-A is far from dead. This is likely old news to Stereophile staff members, but I no doubt missed the memo.

First new system in 20 years

Hi All,
I've been reading through the forums and I've been really impressed at the quality of the responses.

Anyway, I'm trying to update my old system as my receiver died. My old system consisted of:
Harman Kardon hk795i receiver
B&O red line speakers
B&O turntable
Nakamichi BX125 tape deck
Yamaha CD player - don't know the model

Halide Design S/PDIF Bridge article

The recent posting of the review of the Halide Design S/PDIF Bridge has a major omission in referring to DACs that support asynchronous USB. The article states: "However, only a very few products currently available—from Ayre Acoustics, dCS, and Wavelength Audio—have featured this mode, and these have used it as the front-end circuit for a full-function D/A processor".

The second generation HRT Music Streamers all support asynchronous USB, from the entry level Music Streamer II at $149 to the Music Streamer Pro at $499.

Sony ex-2m

I have found a sony ex-2m record player/ 8track and tuner combo. It was in my grand mothers closet. It seems in good shape, the 8 track and tuner works but for the turntable I cannot get it to work. won't spin. I took off the "turn table" and it seems like where I think the idler wheel should be it is spinning and changes speeds. But, there is no rubber on the idler, but there is no broken or parts of any wheel or rubber in side the case. I cannot imagine at anytime Grandma took off the cover and removed anything. I cannot find any info on the web on this model.

Album art with WAV files

I am loading a lot of my CD's into the computer to Channel D's Pure Music and iTunes...ALL are WAV files. 75% produce album art when the right buttons are pushed BUT the rest do not. It seems the art is available if iTunes sells the music but if I find the art on any other source, it refuses to load. I get a error message that says the artwork cannot be modified (even when there is none)...

I tried 'cover scout' but that pretends to not even see my files...

Marantz UD5005 Blu Ray/CD player with older system?

My dad and I both have older stereo systems that we want to pair with the Marantz UD5005. The advantages are obviously the nice disc player to go with our audio system, and the Blu Ray with our HDTV, so we do not have to buy them separately. Here are the specifications of the Marantz UD5005:

My question is, is this technology too advanced to connect to a Marantz 2270 amplifier and work simply as a CD player? and then connect it separately to our TV for Blu Ray?

AYRE

I friend of mine who works in hifi has heard rumours AYRE are going to do a non-usb DAC. Does anyone know when this might appear ?

I'd love to have an AYRE dac but it it means i need to build or invest in yet another mini-computer and I don't see the point since I'm heavily invested into Squeezebox/server.

Friend mentioned Moon DAC as a good alternative. I've got a musical fidelity XDAC V-8 but have a feeling I could do better.
