Question for you recording guys

I have a few recordings on disc that seem to be ever so slightly out of synch and I was wondering what causes this and if it is intentional or a product of poor reproduction.

What is going on when I can hear the track begin just a split second before it actually comes in? I'm talking about an extremely low in level jump the gun kinda thing? Is this some sort of ambience enhancement attempt or what? This has me curious and I have always wanted to ask somebody what was going on. Thanks in advance.

Accordion Guy's Disappointed in Margot Timmins

Joey deVilla, <I>aka</I> Accordion Guy in the 21st Century, is disgruntled (trust me, Accordion Guy is at his best when he's not gruntled). His beef? The fundraising dinner held last night for Canadian MP Sam Bulte, <I>aka</I> Hollywood's MP, because of the perhaps coincidental linkage between her advocacy of extremely restrictive copyright legislation and her acceptance of financial support (57% of her campaign war chest) from institutions such as the Canadian Motion Pictures Distributors Association, Canadian Publishers Council, and the Entertainment Software Alliance.

Mark Twain vs Tom Sawyer

Mark Twain vs Tom Sawyer

I love Twain and view UC/Berkeley's Mark Twain Project to print <I>everything</I>. ever written by Sam Clemens (even down to the individual drafts) as God's own work. Yet, like many readers (including Ernest Hemingway), I've always had a problem with <I>The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn</I>'s final chapters&mdash;say, around the time Tom Sawyer highjacks the novel.

Does HT surround-sound only need to be "good enough?" According to a new NIH-sponsored study, "the circuits in the brain that process auditory information are influenced powerfully by the circuits that control where the animal is looking&mdash;the animal's direction of gaze." Umm, the animal being, for the purposes of this study, a barn owl.

I love Cantaloupe Records. David Lang's <I>The Passing Measures</I> is one of the most beautiful compositions I've heard this millennium and Phil Kline's <I>Zippo Songs</I> was my hit of CES2006. While supplies last, you can order a <I>free</I> Bang On A Can/Cantaloupe Records sampler and find out for yourself how good their recordings are. Adventurous and different&mdash;and did I mention <I>free</I>?

How about that Dealer Locater?

I want to open by saying I think this past year's change in the website was an excellent one. That said, while roaming around getting the news off the home page I gave a shot, for the first time, to the dealer locater feature. I live about thirty miles from downtown Chicago, so I searched for all dealers in a 50 mile radius. I got 66 listings. All but 2 were Circuit City and Best Buy. How many users of the website want or need to be advised of these outlets?

Where have all the record reviews gone?

I just picked up the current stereophile and discovered precisely one new record review, that of Neko Case's "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood",

Granted it was the 'Records 2Die4" issue, so there were reviews. And I was pleased to see Ms. Case get such attention. I've became a fan of her work as solo artist and with The New Pornographers after an NPR review led to an impulse purchase.
