Alan Turing

Alan Turing

A good read from The New Yorker. I saw a special on the Enigma Project once and they interviewed a woman who had worked with Turing at Bletchley Park. She basically said that everybody at BP was phenomenally bright, but that Turing was a genius and that the difference between being intelligent and being a genius was the difference between going from A to G and from A to Zed. Genius didn't need the intermediate steps that even the very brightest of us require.

I'm not sure what makes it so special; I'm not sure if it really is as special as Mark Levinson says it is. "This is about life. This is going to bring digital music life."

Hardwood Floors

This is my first time living in a house 2/3's of which has hardwood flooring over crawl space. I am finding my Infinity Reference Kappa 8's to be too boomy and have ended up hooking up a pair of B&W standmounts instead to alleviate the boom. Any tips would be greatly appreciated that would allow me to enjoy the Infintys save for the usual rugs and echo busters I already employ. Thank-you very much.

Forums

Hello all -

I am very new to this game and trying to get some help with my first purchase for a HT system. I am a bit unsure of what speakers to purchase and could use some "expert" input.

I am going to buy a Panny XR55 (maybe xr70)
My rooom is 19X12
Use system for 75/25 movies to music
Plan on buying surrounds to match brand of front speakers - 5.1

Who has had a chance to listen to the new QUADs?

Forums

I am very curious in regards to the Quad 2905 speakers.
Has anybody had the chance to compare them to the Quad 989 speakers, considered by many as the most accurate panel speakers on the market?
I understand that the structure has been improved, but what about the sound / frequency range / dB threshold?

A general rant and rave courtesy of Mrs. Buddha...

Aloha,

I was lounging around leafing through hi fi mags this past weekend and Mrs. Buddha was doing a leisurely over the shoulder look into my universe.

After a bit, she asked if I ever noticed how NONE of the systems in the equipment ads would ever actually work.

I said, "Wha-choo talkin' 'bout, woman? They work great!"

She said, "Nope, ain't none got any power cords or interconnects."
