Receiver choice?

Forums

Hi Guys,
I am a newbie and wanted to get some opinions on receivers. I have 2 in mind for my 2 channel set up:
Harmon Kardon HK 3480- 120 watts x2
Marantz SR4021- 80 watts x2(20hz to 20khz)

I can get the HK for about $260 and the Marantz list for $440 on line. I am pretty set on buying the Marantz CC4001 cd changer. I'm not too sure on the speakers yet. I listened to the Paradigm Monitor 11's and I liked them and they are in my budget. Question is do you think the Marantz receiver is worth the extra money compared to the HK? Thanks in advance!

Van Alstine Ultra DAC...Thumbs UP!!!

Let me preface this by saying that my 2 channel system before the addition of the Ultra DAC consisted of: Conrad Johnson PV14L tube preamp, Consonance CD120 player, Van Alstine OmegaStar 440EX amp, & AAD 2001 monitors. The musicality of the system was superb to put it mildly. I was extremely satisfied, "BUT". Here we go, you know what that means. The never ending quest, the relentless need to squeeze that something extra out of my system. Already being amazed at the performance of Frank's amp, I just had to try his Ultra DAC. So order it I did.

Wowsers

Wowsers

These were in my favorite store in the used audio market. One half of the floorspace was devoted to projectors, ranging from 8mm to big theatrical arc-lamp jobs; the other half to classic hi-fi, like this pair of RCA MI-12182As.

Question/Suggestion for John Atkinson

I am currently shopping for a new turntable and have yet to see any review address the area that concerns me most. That is WEAR. I have LP's in my collection that just cannot be replaced and wear is a major concern.

So, would it be possible to include a wear test in your reviews of record players? How about taking a brand new LP and just playing it until the wear becomes audible?
