Cartoonist Doug Marlette has made me laugh until milk shot out my nose. He has also made me squirm when he has pilloried my hobbyhorses. I've always figured that political humor was at its best when it made you laugh at stuff you believed in—anybody can raise a chuckle over something you're already contemptuous of.

Anyone know R. Reina's room size?

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone remebers reading what size room Robert Reina uses to audition speakers in?
He gave such a rave review of the Monitor Audio RS6, and I was wondering if they'd sound too boomy in my small 9x12 room. I picked up a pair of the RS1's and I'm very impressed. They sound as good as my Quad 21L's, they just don't have the last bit of bottom end to them. I wanted to try the RS5's, but couldn't find them for the right price.

Inside Job

Inside Job

"Last fall, Condé Nast Traveler aviation correspondent Barbara S. Peterson applied to work as a Transportation Security Administration screener. Her mission: to investigate reports that despite a five-year, $20 billion overhaul of the passenger screening system, checkpoint personnel are failing at the job. Being hired was only her first surprise. Peterson's two months at the airport revealed how this overtaxed but dedicated workforce copes with equipment shortages, budget cuts, and record numbers of (not very pleasant) passengers. Here is an unprecedented look at the reality of America's last line of defense."

Time For a Change?

I'm thinking of upgrading my hi-fi amplification, current set up is rega p3, arcam alpha8 integrated + alpha 8p power (bi-amped) monitor audio 5i, alpha 7 cd, Van Den Hull speaker cable. I would still like to keep it bi-amp, if it was worth it. However, a friend has recommended Music Fidelity A5 and not bothering bi-amping for now. i listen to my turntable more than my cd player and enjoy detail in my sound. Any suggestions?

TV creating noise through stereo

Hello,
I'm having an issue with my stereo. It seems that whenever I have the stereo and TV on at the same time, such as watching a movie, there is a very slight high-pitched ringing that comes through the speakers. You can't always hear it, but it's definitely there. If you turn the TV off, the noise goes away. My TV is also increasing the hum when I am listening to my turntable (along with producing the same ringing sound). When I turn the TV off, the hum goes back to its normal level (very low). Any ideas on how I can get rid of this noise?

Among These Things and Places Were

Though I was doing my best to give passengers room to exit the train, I was hopelessly in the way. On some mornings, it's impossible to stand on the train and not be in the way. Everyone scrambles toward the open doors, as if departing this train, right now — right now! — means the world. The world. I think it's because I hate this, that I try to do the opposite. When it's my turn to depart, I move carefully and slowly, perhaps in some futile attempt to show others how gracefully done it can be. Fellow passengers, there is another way. Watch as I move through these doors with such ease and finesse.
