A "non-audiophile" comment on vinyl sound

I mentioned in another post that the local indie record store (Happy Trails in Corvallis, Oregon) reports vinyl now outselling CDs. I was in there the other day and got to talking with a kid (maybe 16) who was buying some heavy metal albums. I asked him why he was buying vinyl rather than CDs and he said it sounded better. Pressed for details, he explained: "When you crank up a CD it just gets louder. A record sounds, y'know, BIGGER!"

Evaluation on New CD Player - Wound up finding more about my Receiver

Well my new Rotel RCD-1072 CD player was brought home.

I spent half a day messing with it in various configurations and receiver settings to A. See what the 1072 sounds like in various states of connect
B. Put it up against my $70 Panansonic Universal Player.

Want to get a new speaker setup for my computer

I've been browsing these forums for about a month, and now that I've gotten my X-mas money and all, I've decided to purchase some new speakers for my computer. Currently I have Creative T5400's which I thought were amazing, the problem was that the subwoofer booms way too much now that I guess my ears have matured or something, and I rarely listen to music or watch movies with the speakers (the only thing I really use them for is to play games).

Now that Christmas has come and gone, and my need to hear Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bells Rock" has subsided — I'm not sure but I think it has something to do with those electric guitar flourishes&#151, it's seems an appropriate time to say something about the continuing and astonishing turmoil in the record business which according to most sources experienced a nearly 20 percent decline in sales of physical product compared with last Christmas.

speaker suggestions for McIntosh components

I've just inherited some FREE Mcintosh components (they still need to be sent out for refurbishing): MR78 tuner, MC2105 Amp, and C28 Pre-Amp. Most of the stereo systems I've had up to this point have not been "high-end" equipment, so I'm looking for some feedback on what speakers to pair up with this stuff. I've heard that Klipsch, KEF, or B&W would be good brand choices, but I'd like to stay under $1000.00. I'm a musician, not necessarily an audiophile. That being said, I'd like to have a system I can crank when I want, but still have as much clarity as possible (don't we all?).

Sony manual turntable, PS-LX350H

I know this isn't an "audiophile" level turntable, but does anyone have any experience with it? It looks nicely made, and has plenty of adjustability. Also it's very cheap which is good for me. I've found it new for ~$140. I can't figure out if it has a built in pre-amp however. Does anyone know? I've seen it listed in the specs on one site, but not on a couple of others so I'm confused.

Is it good enough to be an introduction into vinyl for me without spending a lot of money? Then if I'm still into it in a year when I get out of school I'll get something nicer.

If I want good headphones for cheap, are the Grado SR-60s essentially the only game in town?

i've been doing some research and these seem to come up again and again...i def. don't want to spend very much on them, they are $70 and that's about my price range...so no other really good contenders huh? anyone here have the SR-60s, good stuff?

Peachtree Audio Decco?

Forums

Has anyone heard Peachtree Audio's Decca integrated amp yet? From what I hear, it's a $800 hybrid tube/solid state 50 Wpc with a built-in DAC designed by Scott Nixon, with a direct slot for a Sonos amp in the back. It seems like a pretty good solution to beginners getting into hi-fi audio, at least, from the computer angle. Looks intriguing...

Bad day report - EAR V20 and Creek 5350SE

Hi,

it was a bad day for my audio equipment today... I suddenly started getting lots of static from the right channel of my EAR V20. The tubes are pretty new, the amp was retubed a year ago and was not used at all between September and early December. The tubes don't have more than 200 hours on them.

Any idea as to what might be the problem? I'm contacting EAR of course, but it's the holidays today...
