Numbers, Percentages, and Cold Fact

The music industry is responding to our recent enthusiasm for vinyl, <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/business/la-et-vinyl18-2008au… the Los Angeles Times</a>. Original Recordings Group, a small vinyl-only label, needed only 24 hours to sell 4000 copies of TV on the Radio's excellent <i>Return To Cookie Mountain</i>. The label is on the way to grossing their first million dollars, and expects to double its vinyl output in 2009. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has increased their vinyl production from 2000 copies per title to up to 15,000 copies. Such increases, of course, have a dramatic impact on pressing plants. Record Technology Inc's average pressing per title has doubled to 3000 units over the last few years.

David Byrne & Brian Eno's new album - download the 24 bit FLACs!

I just found out that a downloaded the new David Byrne & Brian Eno album, "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" is available for $8.99! The aqlbum is available as 320 kbps mp3 files but for the same price, it is also available as the mp3 files plus 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLACs! The "media bundle" package also comes with a hi-res album cover (1000 x 1000 pixels), and a PDF of lyrics and liner notes. Both the flac and mp3 file have tags, but you may want/need to edit the tags to conform your particular tagging scheme.

receiver? or integrated?

Hi! I recently posted asking for advice about a system. I got a good deal on a pair of martin logan fresco i speakers a dynamo bass and a vignette speaker (both also martin logan) I am planning on using the vignette as a center speaker below the plasma and the two frescos on the sides. Can somebody recommended me the best possible amp or ht receiver? I said before that my budget was $2,000 but i am willing to go up to $3,000 if it can make a difference on performance. Also can somebody recommend me a some good cables.

Remember?

Remember?

Fans of the Fiery Furnaces will be happy to know that the band is releasing a collection of live material. Charmingly titled <i>Remember</i>, the album brings together songs from the entire Fiery Furnaces catalog, digging way back to 2005 and even including tracks from last year's <i>Widow City</i>. With 51 tracks in all, <i>Remember</i> will be available as a triple-LP gatefold, and will include a coupon for free MP3 download. Pretty artwork, too.

Return to Forever Live in New York August 8th, 2008

Forums

In my opinion one of the best bands of the fusion era was Return To Forever. Chick Corea, Al DiMeola, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White were together what a lot of people refer to the "Beatles of Jazz". The first album I ever heard from them was Romantic Warrior which to this today is always in heavy rotation for me.

West Side Records!

What a find. I never knew that this place existed all this time I've lived in Upper West Side in NYC. (It's located on 72nd St. & Broadway; to the west of Broadway.) Perfect little gem of a used LP store. I couldn't believe how many records were packed into such a small space! They mainly do classical and jazz, very little or no rock. But for classical, at least, their selection was on par or better than Academy Records near Union Square. They had a VPI 17.5 there, and I suspect they do a pretty good job cleaning their records.

Sub-$3000 System Building - Help :)

I'm trying to build a sub-$3000 system (not including Subwoofer) and would appreciate comments on the setup and suggestions. I'll start off by saying that I live in Hong Kong.

The system should be expected to run PS3 Blue-Ray movies, Media Center movies (Surround, sadly by Creative Labs's Xi-Fi and their horrible analog surround setup), and play music from both CD player (computer) or collection (MP3s, WMAs).

I currently have a small living room (a 10x13 feet space within a 10x18 room), but am expecting to be using this system in a larger setting in the future.

Polk Audio "Polkfest" - Maryland - October 17/18, 2008 - Information

I wasn't sure if any of you local Stereophile folks would be interested but Polk Audio is hosting the annual Polkfest at the HQ in Baltimore, MD this year.

This is our 7th year of having a forum member organized event and only the second time that Polk has opened the doors to the membership and beyond. The following day is a celebration of all things audio related, from tubes to tube traps and more.

Here's a link to the information page:
