Looking for recommendations for new speakers, amp and surround sound processor

Forums

I am in the process of shopping around for a new AV equipment and would love the recommendations of experienced audiophiles. I have a room that's 25' x 15'. I currenly have a Hitachi 55" Plasma (only 1080i, will eventually upgrade), and a Denon DVD-1930CI (will eventually upgrade). I am looking to purchase a 5 speaker surround sound system, with sub-woofer, amplifier and surround sound processor that is capable of producing great video and audio for not only movies but also for listening to CD's.

Help with selecting a replacement cartridge

Well for my birthday last week I decided to pony up and finally add that turntable I've been thinking about. I did some research and found one I liked on ebay (Rega Planar 25) at a decent price and went for it. Finally got my hands on it today and after fussing around for about 30 minutes with very very poor sound (think subway PA system quality) I realized that the needle was badly bent. Hey, I never claimed to be a genius. So I bent it back and, while the sound improved dramatically, the whole time I'm thinking, not only was it bent, but I just bent it back with my bare hands.

Timeless, Unforgettable, Enduring

Timeless, Unforgettable, Enduring

We recently posted all of our coverage of two classic turntables: The Rega P3 and the Sota Sapphire. And when I say "classic," I don't mean old. I mean timeless, unforgettable, enduring. Take a look at our Hot 100 list of all-time most important products, and you'll see that the British Rega ranks at number 30, while the all-American Sota stands proud at number 54. Our reviews of these turntables date back to 1984, and provide information that is still very much useful and interesting today.

SOTA Sapphire vs. VPI Scoutmaster

I'm starting to be interested in these two TT makers, and would appreciate your opinion.

So, SOTA Sapphire with a sub-$1000 Tonearm (maybe the JMW-9 or the RB300 or something)OR the VPI Scoutmaster (or the Scout - cheaper) with the JMW-9.

Thoughts? Any around or under $3,000 TT/Tonearm combos I shouldn't overlook? A plus if it is made in the USA.

I'd also like any input on the vacuum clamp system. My immediate reaction is "no way" because I'd think it would add noise and make things unecessarily complicated.

US HIFI - I'm Lost

OK I am moving out to the states (from the UK) in a couple of months time and will need to look at getting new HiFi when I am out there........Initially I will not be shipping my CD's or LP's out there, so my main source component will be an apple ipod.....I will be investing in one of the 160gb classics.....all my music is ripped in lossless format.

Speaker solution for small room

So, I recently purchased an Onkyo tx-sr705 home theater receiver and I'm looking for a speaker solution to accompany it. I have no more than $500 I can spend on the speakers (excluding subwoofer I suppose). I was originally considering the Yambeka 5.0 system but now it seems like that may be a little too large for the space I have. Overkill and all that. Other options I've looked at are the budget athena series, the jbl venue series, and the harmon kardon hkts-18.

AlexO's and Stew's excellent adventure

"...I love it when I'm right" - DUP"

As many of you know, my friend Stew and I have been at DUP's some time ago where we were quite impressed with DUP's Legacy Whispers. From that point on, my friend Stew was contemplating replacing his JM Lab Nova Utopia Be's with the Whispers.
