WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.

I'm beginning to think the Democrats are just plain fucking stupid. I mean, politicians are stupid in general but this new shit is just priceless.

The Fall of SACD

It has come to my attention that BIS Records, an SACD label, has been recording in high-bit PCM, not DSD, since 2005. They were simply transcoding to SACD for the consumer disc release. This means that any rave review of a BIS recording since '05 was in effect, a rave for high-bit PCM. Was Kal one of those ravers ?

BIS now joins Sony, Naxos, DG and Telarc in dumping SACD.

Obama is making politics fun again

Harry Teague voted along the party line on the recent CAP/Tax bill that passed The House.

We just elected Rep. Harry Teague (D) into office to protect our oil assets in the Permian Basin. Harry is a well known oilman that has made a tidy fortune in the oil well servicing end of the business. He is also very aggressive having run out all his Texas competitors from The Basin so he has a virtual monopoly in his line of work. Anyway, he had a town hall meeting yesterday. I should have went. Here is an eyewitness account I received via email last night.

Have you ever met an audiophile?

Well, I'm sure plenty of people have met audiophiles (in person) but I mostly haven't, really (other than dealer staff). Met someone who reportedly has Maggies but I haven't heard them; and I once met someone with Thiels and I did hear about 10 min of music there. That was years ago and I've never run into anyone else. Plenty of computer geeks, tv big screen consumers, car freaks, wine snobs, etc out there but I don't hear doodly about music reproduction, from my little social circles.

Look: I mean, listen: I mean, look: I'm the sort of guy who is comfortable with the idea that there's more than just music to this whole hi-fi thing. It's not all about the music. That's bullshit. It's also about friendship and peace and art and beauty. It's about belonging. You can get into hi-fi even if you don't listen to music. What? Yes! It's about getting drunk and high and lost. It's about girls and boys. It's also about the gear. But you can get into hi-fi even if you don't like gear. What? Yes! It's about more than just what the gear does. It's also about how the gear looks when it does what it does. Hi-fi is a full-on sensory attack, a blissed-out mind-fuck, an ocean, a sky, a lion in the tall, yellow grass. We feel with our heads and our hearts, with our ears and our eyes and every little bit of our little human selves.

Um, Vinyl Man's favorite colors are orange and green, obviously. This photo was taken by intrepid crime photographer, Michael Lavorgna, outside the old Justice League Europe Headquarters in Paris, France.

Upgrading the ol' 'table!

Hey, fellas - long time no post!

I've almost decided to upgrade my turntable soon, and I wanted to get your ever-helpful thoughts.

What I have: Rega P2 w/Exact cartridge, and Graham Slee Era Gold MK V phono stage.

Now, with the help of my local dealer, I've narrowed it down to two possible paths (although I'm open to suggestions):

(1) Get a VPI Scout (not the Scout 2) for somewhere under $1800 MSRP. I'd keep my Exact for now, but maybe snag an Ortofon 2M Black in the future (yummy!).
