Abbingdon Music Research PH-77 Phono Equaliser Specifications

Why bother with three phono preamps most of us can't afford? For the same reason the enthusiast automobile magazines cover the newest Ferraris and Lamborghinis: just reading about them is fun.

Silverman's Beethoven Series Continues in San José

Silverman's Beethoven Series Continues in San José

Robert Silverman, whose many recordings for Stereophile have made him a living legend among audiophiles, continues his series of performances of all of Beethoven's piano sonatas in San José, California, November 11 and 18. Held in San Jose's lovely and acoustically superior Le Petit Trianon Theatre, the concerts mark the halfway point in Silverman's eight-concert series. All proceeds go toward building, at Stanford Children's Hospital, an Elf Foundation Room of Magic: a private entertainment theater in which uplifting music and films can be shared with patients.

Suggest a new cartridge (or don't) for my SOTA Comet?

It's an older version (early/mid '90s) so it has an AudioQuest-sourced tonearm. I bought a Grado 8MZ at the same time but both have had relatively little play over the years. Fairly moderate use the first few years and then virtually no use for the last 10 years for both. Hoping to get back to vinyl in a bigger way soon however.

New Farce?

I'm currently building a new system and searching for a CD player with a maximum budget of $2500. When I scanned through the Nov. issue and spotted the CDP-8 review, I dove right in.

Having been impressed by a few NuForce products, and a longtime fan of Wes my interest level was high. Then we hit the wall. A $1500 CD player powered by a wall wart. Really? Gimme a break. Hows about a few dozen AA batteries or perhaps a hand crank?

I really don't know what they were thinking, but the CDP-8 is off my list.
