Sure, I would love to go.....
The Consumer Electronics Show is open only to the industry each year, but if you could go, what would you want to see most?
I am not really interested in going to CES, but instead of going there I would like to go and not necessarily in this order: 1) On a JA recording trek to record Cantus. Need a gopher, John? 2) On a factory tour of the Denon Disc manufacturing facility in Madison, GA, 3) On a tour of the MoFi facilities and sit in on a mastering session. 4.) Sit with Roger Nichols on the next Steely Dan album to be recorded. 5.) Sit with Al Schmitt on the next Diana Krall session. If you get to do any of this consider yourself blessed. I am sure my employment would preclude me from doing most of this, but I can dream, can't I? It has become more about the software for me these days.
I'd love to see everything! But my main interest would be in all the more affordable home stereo and video gear. For instance, this year there are some interesting developments in what is known as "Home Theater In A Box." I've always felt that the current crop of HTIB equipment was lacking some key features (like video recording) that should be built in. With this year's CES, we're starting to see such products.
Less "conversion" of technology. I really don't care if my TV can also be my stereo and my computer. I guess I'd like to see more small speaker technology that kills, more "fake" surround sound as Cambridge Audio is working on, something, anything truly new that isn't about iPods or making everything from the toaster to the microwave oven run through the same system.
I would like to see (and hear) equipment with jaw-dropping good sound and good looks that I could actually afford without too much pain made by a US of A company known for the reliability of their products and top-notch customer support. Beings my body has grown fond of oxygen over the years, I will not hold my breath.
I'd like to see a digital (potentially wireless), synchronous link between source components (CD, SACD, etc) and powered speakers (with enclosed pre-amp & amp). The money saved on cabling will allow for the purchase of better components. There is no better business case in high-end audio than the elimination of cabling between components (where permissible).
