Headphone Reviews

Raw frequency response shows these headphones as fairly positionally sensitive with widely varying low frequency response as the headphones are moved to different positions for the various measurements. On my head, however, I found the seal relatively easy to achieve and I think actual performance heard will be somewhat better than that measured. From 500Hz and up, compensated frequency response shows a strong warm tilt, but a very even response otherwise. I think this indicated the fairly coherent, though veiled, listening experience.

30Hz square wave shows decent performance with the top of the waveform remaining above zero throughout. This coupled with the low THD+noise distortion performance in the low frequencies are indicative of the fairly tight bass heard.

300Hz square wave response shows some ringing, but lack of a strong leading edge peak is indicative of a treble without harshness. Listening tests confirm treble that's easy on the ears.

Impedance and phase plots show a 45 ohm headphone with little in the way of wild impedance swings. This, coupled with the ability to achieve 90dBSPL at the ear with 40mVrms drive signal indicate a headphone that will play plenty loud and well from portable players.

Isolation is surprisingly good for a headphone with pads this small. Broadband isolation of -11dBSPL indicates these should work fairly well as a commuter headphone in the city, or in other fairly loud environments.

Summary
I found the Soul by Ludacris SL150 a breath of fresh air in what otherwise is the fairly mediocre category of "Celebrity Headphones." I think they're the best of both the Ludacris and Dr. Dre headphones that have a headband, and I'm quite comfortable giving them a hearty recommendation for those interested in a celebrity can.
