From the January 2004 issue, Robert J. Reina surveys the <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/loudspeakerreviews/104epos">Epos ELS-3 loudspeaker</A>, reporting at the outset, "I have not been this excited about an entry-level speaker in years." BJR explains, "In three areas, it exceeded in performance what I've heard from its competition."

We are saddened to report the death of Decca recording engineer Kenneth E. Wilkinson on January 13 at the age of 92, in Norfolk, England. The news was reported by LP historian Michael Gray of <I>The Absolute Sound</I> on the Internet newsgroup rec.audio.high-end.

Once upon a time, when I was a mere sprout in journalism school, there came the moment when everyone had to decide which sort of writing and/or editing he or she wanted to pursue in the workplace of the real world&mdash;a harsh reality that was then fast approaching. Most of my fellow students, who ranged in age from 23 to 62, chose one of two paths: murder or scandal.

John Atkinson's track-by-track written evaluation in the July 2003 issue of his new <A HREF="https://secure.stereophile.com/stereophile/recordings.shtml"><I>Editor's Choice: Sampler & Test CD</I></A> (Stereophile STPH016-2) drew me like a magnet. Here was a reviewer-editor putting into words his musical perceptions, gathered while he served as the engineer for the various recordings sampled on this compilation. JA's dual roles of writer and engineer merge complementary perspectives, yielding what should be useful descriptions of the sonic values of some of my favorite reference CDs. As I was about to start my review of Piega's new hybrid loudspeaker when I read this article, it was only natural to test whether this Swiss full-range speaker could deliver "what you should hear."

Roy Hall, of Music Hall, US distributor of the Creek and Epos brands, called me one day a few years back. He was hawking review samples of Epos speakers.

Primedia has announced <I>The Connected Guide To The Digital Home</I>, the first consumer magazine dedicated entirely to adopting and integrating audio, video, information, telecommunications, security, and other personal and home technologies. Formerly known as <I>Audio Video Interiors</I> (<I>AVI</I>), the standard-bearer for the home theater revolution, <I>The Connected Guide To The Digital Home</I> is being introduced as the natural evolution of <I>AVI</I>.

Sam Tellig and Lonnie Brownell both provide trenchant analyses of the <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/amplificationreviews/597bryston">Bryston B-60R integrated amplifier</A>. Tellig notes, "With Bryston gear, you get solid engineering and impeccable&mdash;I was going to say unimpeachable&mdash;build quality. This is what you pay for; not bulletproof faceplates, gold-plated name badges, or the like."
