I used Stereophile's loan sample of the top-of-the-line Audio Precision SYS2722 system to measure the Audio Note CD-4.1x (see www.ap.com and the January 2008 "As We See It"); for some tests, I also used my vintage Audio Precision System One Dual Domain.

What was weird was that, while setting levels, as I switched back and forth between DACs with the pink noise running, there was a slight difference in the character of the sound. After I'd adjusted the NAD's volume trim, the SPL meter read "0dB" for each DAC, but something subtler was going on—the tonal quality of the pink noise shifted just a little in the room.
