Yes, We Will Have No Bananas?

Yes, We Will Have No Bananas?

As a member of the Park Slope Food Coop, I've been seeing signs warning of an international organic banana shortage for months now, but I assumed it was just a seasonal fluctuation, coupled with last year's brutal hurricane season. The New Scientist claims it may be a genetic apocalypse.

"They Thought You'd Say This: Unlikely phrases from real phrase books" is a hoot. When I lived in Peru, I collected tourist phrase books from our local second-hand book kiosk—a place that had a two-for-one trade-in policy on books in English. Since I was teaching ESL to folks that wanted to get jobs in tourism and on the police squad dedicated to tourist-related matters, I figured that they'd need to know a lot of these common phrases. I was stunned at how many books had unlikely scenarios, but few of them were as outlandish as in this article.

Widespread Panic

Widespread Panic has a tune out called "Second Skin" that might be a little edgy for the older guys, but if you have any acid rock left in your blood, it's worth checking out. For you guys that like to download a tune at a time, this one is worth a lot more than a buck.

The new disc is called 'Earth to America' and will be out in early June.

WP and the Moscode

WP hit it out of the park with the review of the Moscode. I especially like his summation of "why" we are listening to our gear or more to what we should be listening "for" in our gear. Is analytical or more accurate equate to possibly less "fun" which is why we listen in the first place...it IS about the software, at least to me.

Paul Simon and Digititis...

Aloha,

I've been spending time listening to the new Paul Simon disc, and it made me think of an issue that I haven't really thought of in a while - Digititis.

I think there is a certain frequency range that Paul's voice occupies when he sings a certain way that is very attention getting in a bad digital kind of way with regard to hearing digital artifacts.

It's on those parts of songs where he "ups" his register a bit. Mostly when he's trying to sound a little plaintive or pensive.

Looking for a great acoustic guitar recording - need suggestions

What is the best acoustic guitar recording that you know of. I'm looking for a recording that will help put the guitar right in the room with me; I'd like to see how close my system can come to reproducing an acoustic guitar. The recording can have vocals or be without, but I would like to stay away from lots of other instruments as I would like to focus primarily on the guitar. The disc (or LP even)can be in any format too, not looking for specifically a SACD/DVD-A or CD. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
