Frankly it's a bit nutty for me to be doing this review. First, as Publisher of this esteemed journal, my primary duties involve financial and personnel management, as well as a good bit of public relations; I don't need and am not required to perform the exacting tedium of product reviews. Second, <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/interviews/221">Jim Thiel</A> and Kathy Gornik of Thiel are friends of mine. So what, you ask? Well, if this were going to be a uniformly positive review, I would therefore be ruled out as the reviewer; if it's to be wholly or partially negative, it will surely put a strain on one of my best audio friendships.

Another Indie Label Goes the Download Route

Canada has targeted your iPod and hard drive. On March 7, CBC Records, the record label of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, announced a deal with the Independent Online Distribution Alliance (<A HREF="http://www.iodalliance.com">IODA</A&gt;) that will make CBC's entire catalog of 400 active and archival classical, jazz, world, and rock titles available for download. The announcement comes just six weeks after major independent label and distributor Harmonia Mundi declared that it would <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/news/012907harm/">follow the same route</A>.

I had the pleasure of attending a free recital of Ms. Barry this day, and what a remarkable concert it was. The playing was first rate. The venue, Emerson Concert Hall had acoustic to die for. And, it was free for crying out loud. How could people be sitting at home listening to mp3s with an opportunity like this?

Distortion from needle.

Hello all, I purchased a cheap system on the internet to digitize my LP collection, a Gli-Pro Model #BD-1600, with an Audio-Technica cartridge.

The problem I've noticed is that with most LPs I get distortion when a singer's lyrics hit S's or when the drumers cymbles are hit or high notes from flutes.

Is this a limitation of the cartridge?

I'm thinking of upgrading to the Shure M97xE. Would this be a good upgrade for my system?

Any feed back would help.

TIA

Does analog really sound better than digital?

After years of ignoring high end audio I decided to get back into it a year ago. I'm surprised that after 20 years of really smart people working on making digital sound better that a lot of people don't think it sounds better. Does analog really sound better than digital? (Specifically an LP vs. a CD) I know everyone will tell me to listen and make up my own mind. I will do that. I'm wondering what other people on here think. Also do the Editor, authors and contributors to Stereophile continuously listen to both analog and digital? If not why not?
