Progress...

Doug Sax's 1982 article, The Flip Side of Digital... , that has been posted on the main (SF) page discusses amongst other things the concept of progress over time in audio reproduction. On that topic it seems the message is essentially quite negative if not downright depressing.

If one were to accept the argument then one should not be shocked by JGH's apparently dismal opinion of the hobby he had spent (wasted?) the better part of his life dedicated to, rather one should admit that his current opinion is largely a purely rational reaction.

Eye Candy

Andrew Davidhazy, professor of Imaging and Photographic Technology at RIT, has spent a lifetime taking extremely high-speed photos of interesting phenomena like water dripping and stuff blowing up real good. Here's a gallery of his work.

Delay, Deny, and Hope They Die

Delay, Deny, and Hope They Die

Ex-professional football players expect to live with pain, the byproduct of a job well done, says Paul Solotaroff. What they don't expect is the shabby treatment afforded them by the game for which they squandered their good health. And with union representation like Gene Upshaw, who needs hostile team owners to do 'em dirty?

Past Remarks

I have to post this, since many (most?) of you do not follow the financial markets. I do. It is a blessing and a curse. I am sure you understand.

In the past, I have hinted that you all should own some gold and silver. I have made these recommendations from an, ah.., "informed speculator" point-of-view. After all, I have been doing this for 30+ years.

So, where does Hi Fi begin...

Hola,

Took the wife and kids to the Moab Folk Festival and saw David Olney.

He started the show singing into a small "Wurlitzer Organ Speaker" that was wired into some sort of WWII looking metal amp device.

The speakers were BMS compression drivers mounted into DDS horns.

The speaker amps were made by a guy who lives in Salt Lake City and provided sound for the show.

Room was a "hall" that sat around 300.

Getting a new table, need suggestions/advice

Hi

This might have gotten lost in the other place I posted it, so I figure I'd better write it here.

I know this may be flogging a dead horse, but I am having the same issues with choosing between tables. I was considering the Music Hall MMF5, Rega 2, Pro-Ject Xpression III, and Goldring GR1.2.

For Your System-Analyzing Pleasure, or: Screwing the Definite Standards of Quality!

Busy here in <i>Stereophile</i> HQ. As the salsa blares ("<i>Clavo saca clavo!</i>"), we're happy to be working on Issue Number 1 of Volume 31. That's January 2008. And I just sent the 2007 Article Index to our copy editor, Richard Lehnert. Having compiled this list of every equipment report, column, interview, and feature we've published over the past year, I can confidently say:

That picture of a listening room front and center on the main page...

Hi.

If you click on the picture of the listening room on the featured part of the main page, it opens into an old article by JGH about listening rooms.

My question is about the pic.

Are those Magico Mini's and a Wilson Bensech Torus?

Is it Johnathan Valin's listening room?

If it's JGH's, then what's he kvetching about?

(Also, where's the turntable?)

Enquiring audiophiles (well, at least one) want to know!
