Component Match

Hi, I am new to Hi-Fi and need advice in terms of matching components. I auditioned the CEC CD3300R which was coupled with Opera Classica Mini Speakers, Antique Sound Labs 1300 tube amp and Transparent The Link 200 speaker cables and interconnect. The sound was well balanced, instruments & vocals, accurate with good details and nice soundstage. Dire Straits sounded fantastic. However, as I don't want to own a tube amp, I have decided to go for a solid state Copland CSA 8 demo unit. Auditioned and liked it.

Jamo C 807 needs a lean fast amp?

Hi
Taking my first plunge into real HiFi, have been doing a lot of research & have decided on Jamo C 807 speakers, now I'm looking for a lean fast amp & CDP to match it.
At the moment the Rotel RA-06 & RCD-06 seems the most likely options, Cyrus amp has been recommended but is double the price.
The other makes sold here in Dubai are Marantz, NAD, Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer, other makes probably above my budget are Cyrus, Naim, Arcam.

Kolker's cork

Kolker's cork

Adam Kolker’s Flag Day (on the Sunnyside label) is a knotty pleasure. It may leave your head in a coil (take two tracks of hard bop to unwind), but ride with the twists while they’re winding; it’s a soft-toned heady trip. Adam Kolker, who plays tenor sax, soprano sax, and clarinet, is known mainly as a sideman, and he doesn’t try to get out in front of his bandmates on this session—John Abercrombie on guitar, John Hebert on drums, and the irrepressible Paul Motian on drums. I promised when I started writing this blog that I wouldn’t dwell excessively on any individual musician, but Motian is such a giant, I could write about him every day and not be rightly charged with excess.

Power Supply Quirks

I am continually amazed at how sound and performance of individual components are affected by interactions of their power supply.I found that where you plug in each component makes ALL the difference.
I was plagued by a recurring problem with my CD player, where the circuits would suddenly quit and put out loud noise.I had to reset it by unplugging. After trying every grounding trick to no avail,I finally cured it by separating the power supply to the tube buffer in my system, from the digital section of my Equi=Tech. It also smoothed out the sound of my CD's significantly.

After reviewing a long series of minimonitors, I am now working on what may well be an equally varied selection of large floorstanding loudspeakers. This trend began with my review of the Sonus Faber Cremona Elipsa in the December 2007 issue, and continues this month with the Series 2 version of the KEF Reference 207, until recently the flagship model from this English manufacturer (footnote 1). I reviewed</A> the original Reference 207 in February 2003, and was very impressed by what I heard.
