Music in the Round #32

Last time in "Music in the Round," I wrote about the fading presence of SACD in the hardware and software markets. However, the enduring interest in LPs seems to tell us that where there is a demand for high quality by discerning audiophiles, there will be a supply.

Janet watched the record spin wildly, mildly awestruck. She nodded its way—a gesture that took in all the other 78rpm discs piled nearby—and asked, "How long have you had those?"

College Student Budget Newb Setup

So I am at college and need to start paying for music now, so I figured that I should probably get a sound system worthy of playing my music. I can't spend more than $1000 on everything and don't 'want' to spend more than $500. I plan on buying most things on ebay and on craigslist. I don't have transportation so I can't really cruise the garage sales or test equipment at audio shops. I just need some proper equipment that I won't be sorry with and will work well for the money I have. So far from the research I've done I've come up with this.

My starting point: Yamaha RX-V2095

Hello everyone!

I'm so excited about this journey I've decided to undertake. I love music. Absolutely love it. It moves me to my very core, and I simply can't get enough of it. Unfortunately, I can only listen to it four ways right now, all of which suck:

1) Via my car stereo (a stock Bose system in my 2004 Mazda 6 wagon)

2) Via my PC with a SoundBlaster X-Fi Platinum wich plays my song library on iTunes through my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system

3) Via the same computer (above) through a pair of Sennheiser HD 555's.

A Wizard, A True Star

A Wizard, A True Star

Audiophiles probably know Steve Guttenberg for his writing about hi-fi and home theater in numerous publications, as well as his blog The Audiophiliac. What only a handful of folks know, however, is that Steve is a talented graphic artist, manipulating photographic images to express the world as he (sort of) sees it.

Krell, is so great for $10K

Has superb solid 29 pound chassis, but.......those magic feet things of course made it BETTER!!! Who would have thunk it? And of course THIS player sounded better than anything else....who woulda' thunk it I thought those previous units from other makers had that covered? The amazing monthly improvements is beyond imagination. To think though that for $10K, it needed MAGIC FEET, is this a stretch or what?
