Hiroyasu Kondo: Audio Notes

Hiroyasu Kondo: Audio Notes

Our interview with Hiroyasu Kondo—founder of Audio Note Japan, and a legendary figure in his own time—took place during HI-FI '96 last June at the Waldorf=Astoria. It seemed very natural; the crowd at the Show was very internationalist. Herb Reichert of Audio Note New York found us a quiet corner after lunch, and we sat down to talk.

I'm New and Need Suggestions, Please

Hi,

My name is Chris. I am new to this forum.

I need some advice. I have a mixture of stereo components including:

Receiver Yamaha HTR5550

CD changer Onkyo Dx-V380

Speakers Bose 201 series IV

Sub JBL Sub135

I pieced these components together based on what was on sale, not because I thought that they were complimentary to each other. I used this system in my workshop and garage so the goal was to get some sound, save space, and save money.

We recently moved to a new house and the needs have changed.

Soprano Beverly Sills Dead at 78

Soprano Beverly Sills Dead at 78

Treasured as much for her bubbling personality and administrative acumen as for her extraordinary voice, coloratura soprano Beverly Sills died of lung cancer on July 2. One of the finest high-flying sopranos of the latter 20th century, she leaves behind a rich legacy of recordings and an opera scene revitalized by her tireless efforts on behalf of American singers.

Universal Upsets the Apple Cart

Universal Upsets the Apple Cart

The New York Times reported on July 2 that Universal Music Group notified Apple that it will not renew its annual contract to sell music through the iTunes Store, choosing instead to sell music to Apple "at will," meaning it could withdraw its wares with little notice. Executives of both companies declined to comment.

Stereo vs Surround Sound?

After years of wanting to be an audiophile I'm finally in a financial position to do it and have started to research equipment. One thing I've noticed is that there currently seems to be a huge focus on home theaters. Everything at the big box stores is HT and all of the higher end stores in my area seem to have "theater" in their name. Personally I don't have time to sit down and watch a 2 hr movie very often so 95% of the time I'm listening to music. I can't see paying for 4 or 5 extra channels and speakers that will rarely get used since I mostly listen to music.

ripping cd's to a hard drive

I'm looking into ripping my cd collection to a hard drive source(as flac files). I've read reviews about sonos, olive opus, transporter etc. I've learned a lot about the different systems and how they work but there are a few basics I'd like some help with. The DAC, or audio card, are obviously very important on how the digital file sounds when played back, but how important is the optical device in saving the binary down to the hard drive.

SUBSONIC FILTERS

I was wondering why more phono stages don't have at least a switchable subsonic filter? The vast majority of records seem to have at least some warp, which causes significant woofer movement and wasted power, at least on any speakers with true deep bass response. OK - I've heard that purists feel that it screws up the sound, but is this true? Maybe the manufacturers feel that the inclusion of such a filter will turn off the potential market for their product?
