Not Not Fun!

On Friday, I promised myself that I would spend no more money on records until after the New Year. On Saturday, I found myself at Other Music with three LPs in my hands. Gah! I brought them up to the counter, where the cute girl with the black hair was waiting. I felt despicable.

With a heavy heart, I handed my records to the girl.

“Oh,” she exclaimed upon scanning the first LP. And then, “oh,” again, with the second LP. And then, “oh,” once more, with the third LP.

“You win ‘Shopper of the Day,’” she said.

“Are you Karen?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“I’m Stephen. I’m a fan of your recommendations.”

“I can tell.”

I smiled, or tried not to. I’m not sure.

“Actually,” she said, eyeing my Sex Worker LP, “I wish I had listened to this one. I think it’s the only copy we have.”

I wanted to invite her back to my place so that we could listen together.

“Oh,” I said.

“Have you heard any of it yet?”

“No, but it just looked so cool, I had to have it.”

“I’m a big fan of Not Not Fun.”

I wanted to ask her to marry me. Or, at least, out for a slice of pizza or something.

“Me, too,” I said.

“Well, thanks, Stephen. Have a nice night.”

“You, too.”

I went in feeling despicable, and I left feeling like God of the World.

Hey! Not Not Fun Records, another one of my favorite sources for outstanding new music (mostly of the experimental, electronic, psychedelic, radical vein), is having a Holiday Sale! Buy any three LPs and get one free. Or buy any six LPs and get two free. Or go crazy and buy nine LPs and get three free. Etcetera.

For instance, maybe you just made a promise to stop buying new records until 2010. Maybe you just broke that promise and re-promised yourself that, this time, you would really stop buying records, now until February 2010. So what? You see this holiday sale, and you throw caution to the wind, and you click the little “Add to cart” button below the new releases from Topaz Rags, Inca Ore, and Wet Hair, and then you let the cool dudes at NNF know that you’ve selected as your free gift the My Estrogeneration comp which includes exclusive tracks from Zola Jesus, Pocahaunted, Talk Normal, Valet, Samara Lubelski, and more. (Oh. Crap.)

No big deal! You feel great about this because you know that Not Not Fun releases gorgeous, limited edition jams from some of the most exciting and innovative musicians imaginable. It’s true. You should check them out.

And what better time than now?
