Rob, there is something a little odd about that, as reported, since M33 and M23 both have very similar power amplifiers. Are you sure that the two channel stereo amplifiers in each were not bridged mono, with the M33 master driving the left channel and the M23 slave driving the right channel?
Below is an interconnection diagram from NAD's website illustrating this, including the 12_VDC trigger from the M33 master to switch on/off the M23 slave.
