Audio Note (UK)
Adrian Ford-Crush manned the Audio Note (UK) room solo at CAF, though whispers circulated about the brand’s major domo Peter Qvortrup lurking in the crowd. Surprisingly, the usual Audio Note techno and classical blasts were replaced by soothing folk and jazz, a balm for weary show-goers. The AN-E/SPx Ltd Field Coil Loudspeakers ($65,000/pair) delivered their characteristically forceful and fluid sound, preparing for their upcoming Stereophile review at Chez Micallef.
The all-Audio Note UK system also included the TT Three Turntable with PSU1 ($9412), IO I Moving Coil Cartridge ($5028), Arm Three/II Tonearm ($2465), and the AN-S3 Step Up Transformer ($4525). For digital duties, the Audio Note CDT Four CD Transport ($21,119) was paired with the Audio Note DAC 4.1x Balanced Signature ($37,713), all feeding the new Meishu Konzertmeister 300B Integrated Amplifier ($65,000).
I had previously encountered Audio Note (UK)'s field coil speakers in Munich, but the room's acoustics had muffled their potential. At CAF, however, the system was a revelation, delivering a performance brimming with speed, spirit, and a bold soundstage—hallmarks of field coil design.
Fink's "Maker" was rendered with fiery intensity, while Dexter Gordon's "One Flight Up" surprised with a wideband, stinging forcefulness that belied the saxophonist's typically mellow tone.
Once again, Audio Note (UK) had created a sonic oasis amidst the chaos of the show floor.
