Dedicated to Vinyl

At some point, I hope to post a long list of links (A Long List of Links) to sites that specialize in vinyl LPs. This will be for you, dear readers. But also for me! I have been collecting the web addresses and adding them to a Favorites folder. If you know of some sites that offer great selections of LPs (new or used) and you want to help me go deeper into debt (just kidding, Clifton), please do share! Together we will build a database of all the World Wide Web's most alluring online stores. (Not those kinds of stores! LP stores, you naughty naughties.)

Today I made a purchase at Aural Exploits. Jeff Wong introduced me to the site. Just like me, it is dedicated to vinyl. Rid Of Me, PJ Harvey's powerful and enthralling 1993 album, is now available on vinyl for the first time in I don't know how many years. Limited to only 500 copies, it is pressed on magnificent white vinyl and is exclusive to Aural Exploits. I clicked, I purchased. It was the smart thing to do. In fact, it had to be done.

You should do it, too.

Visit Aural Exploits for vinyl records from XL, Yep Roc, Matador, Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, Vinyl Films, and many other excellent labels.

I gotta disagree Doug(las). While it's not my favorite album, I think Stephen pretty accurately sums up Rid of Me as many other reviewers did back in the day. Give "Man Size" a fresh listen, it's actually hooky and seriously rocks. And PJ is just plain freaky-sexy, hot damn!

O man--- Rid of Me?! Sorry man, but that album is like nails on a chalkboard amplified through tinny headphones on the morning of a bad hangover! Can not deal... OK sorry- I'm glad you're excited though. Maybe the vinyl will be better than the CD, which is what I heard. I really don't like any of Steve Albini's productions thoughg, although at the time a Stereophile reviewer called him the ultimate audiophile producer because he strove to make his recordings sound live, as in a noisy club. I remember working for a bit at Tower Records when Rid Of Me came out, and although the employees were all hardcore music listeners with "out there" tastes, the CD was handed the ultimate insult when one of the workers said "What IS this music anyway? Is this someone's friend'demo tape they snuck in?" HAHAHHA- still funny today. :0

OK- for you Stephen I'll give it another listen next time I get a chance. Maybe it was the wrong venue, wrong time in my life- dunno, but hey, it's the differences in perception that make this all so interesting so I won't promise anything quite yet. I did give my old Nick Cave albums a re-listen (after a post of yours) and ended up digging them all over again, even though for some reason I thought I'd no longer relate. Aural memory can be weird that way!

When I bought one of my first pieces of serious gear, an Audio MK2 pre, from Mike Trei (Sound and Vision), he played this record and it hooked me. The sound of Rob Ellis's drums is almost big as those of Terry Chambers with XTC. HUGE!

As a long-time PJ Harvey fan, I was intrigued that "Rid of Me" was being reissued on white vinyl, and being made available through Aural Exploits. Not knowing who they were, I did some internet research. Seems like there are a lot of unhappy folks on EBay who claim they never have received their purchases or delivery has taken waaaay too long. I still want to purchase this limited release - what has your, or any one else's experience been?
