The Funky Way

A website devoted to exotic (mostly) turntables. Two thoughts struck me: I've actually seen or heard most of these, and I bet if I issued audiophile "baseball cards" I could make a mint.

Seriously. high-quality product photography on the front and specs on the back? I'd buy those.

Not All Hi-Rez Is Equal

Gizmodo's Mark Wilson does a different Blu-ray vs HD DVD comparison. That is, for my kind of difference: audio quality and extras.

"Blu-ray may easily accommodate uncompressed audio with its larger disc capacity, compensating for its lack of special features. Meanwhile, HD DVD may exploit special features at the expense of audio (where most people won't even notice)."

Sigh.

Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross

drchilledaire has uploaded to YouTube this fabulous clip of Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross performing Count Basie's "Everyday (I Have the Blues)." A while ago, I was frustrated in my attempts to get a digital replacement for my well-played copy of Twisted, so I thought I'd probably use this as a chance to rant about the lack of LHR CDs.

Good thing I scoured the tubes of the Internets first. Looks like there's lots of LHR available now. Another fine example of how this blog costs me more money than it makes.

While They're Hot

I was surprised to find that we once featured Stereophile t-shirts on a cover.

Of course I'm forgetting that, at one time or another, we thought it was a good idea to make cover material of gorillas, dogs, babies, C-3PO, an Oscar trophy in the likeness of J. Gordon Holt, and even the table of contents (several times).

I wonder how gorillas influence newsstand sales. Has anyone done the research? And what about gorillas wearing headphones?

Someone: Get me the data on that, please. Thank you.

Lowdown

Today I got The Essential John Denver and a newly remastered reissue of Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees in the same package. Mercy! I got a chill pulling them out of the envelope. Denver and Scaggs together again! What kind of subtle coding was Sony/BMG sending by pairing this dynamic duo? The Seventies really did suck? We're out of ideas so here's two surefire golden oldies? Hi-Fi Takes Over

In our move from the 9th floor to the 6th, a box containing a large amount of Stereophile back issues was damaged. All sorts of wildly-covered, strangely-colored, digest-sized issues came spilling out. A river of history.

"I noticed a box of old magazines exploded during the move, Stephen. They're valuable. They make up the last complete set we've got."
