Hana Introduces Umami Black MC Cartridge

Hana has introduced the Umami Black, a new top-of-line moving‑coil phono cartridge above the Umami Red and Blue. US list price is $11,500. First public US demos are scheduled for September 6 at Quintessence Audio (Morton Grove, IL), with customer shipments beginning September 22.

Their superb articulation of low-level dynamics, their abilities to soundstage and retrieve ambience, made them excellent producers of intimate chamber works such as George Crumb's Quest (Bridge 0007-2), as well as of such orchestral blockbusters as Dorati's interpretation of Stravinsky's Firebird (LP, Mercury Living Presence 90226). Paradigm specifies the Atom v.3's anechoic sensitivity as 86dB/2.83V/m, which is just below average. My estimate was 86.5dB(B), which is within experimental error of the specified figure. The Atom's electrical impedance (fig.1) changes considerably over the audioband, with a minimum value of 4.4 ohms at 220Hz. The small glitch just above 30kHz indicates the presence of the tweeter's main dome resonance, which is higher in frequency than we usually see. The saddle in the magnitude trace at 66Hz indicates the tuning frequency of the port.

The Ref 2 definitely changed the sonic landscape, but in ways that were subtly euphonic and ultimately pleasurable, even after long-term listening—especially after long-term listening. Given that most recordings are too bright and too edgy and most mikes too tipped-up on top, this is not necessarily a bad thing. If you like tubes, you'll like the Ref 2. Put It All Together and...
The Reference Two's sonic parts were impressive, if not perfectly neutral. It had character, but because of its superb overall balance, not what I would call noticeable flaws. A lean speaker would probably mate well with the Ref 2, a plummy one not so well, but to be a truly bad match a speaker would have to almost be off the richness scale, and its bass would have to be nearly out of control. Or, one's room would have to have a serious "bump" in its low-frequency acoustics.
