I strolled in and took a seat in front of a LampizatOr Atlantic 3 TRP DAC ($7325), an Innuos Statement Next-Gen Server & Streamer ($25,000), and Phoenix NET Network Switch ($4349). These components fed a Whammerdyne Heavy Industries DGA-Ultra 2A3 Integrated Amplifier ($5995). Whammerdyne Heavy Industries sounds like a Roadrunner cartoon company gone wrong, but I stayed put.

Souther was a charter member of the so-called Mellow Mafia. It never ceases to amaze me how much rancor and scorn still gets heaped on Southern California acts from the 1970s. The Eagles' "Hotel California" has been played to death for years at audio shows as an example of stellar recorded sound, yet I cannot…
One of my favorite and, hence, most familiar recordings is Cyrus Chestnut's 1994 debut album Revelation (16/44.1 WAV CD rip, Atlantic Jazz, 82518-2). Nicely recorded by our friend Jim Anderson, this whole album is a delight. In particular, I am fascinated by track 3, "Lord, Lord, Lord," where Chestnut's lilting, rolling expository interacts with bassist Christopher J. Thomas in bopping syncopation, underpinned by Clarence Penn's solid drive on drums. The piano is up front, the bass behind with drums over on the left, and there's just enough space for them to fit quite convincingly at the…
