We have, you will note, made this issue a bit fatter than usual to compensate, somewhat, for its lateness. But please, don't expect an 80-page issue every 3 months. NAD has been out there on the leading edge of entry-level high-end sound long enough that some audiophiles reckon they invented the category. Sure, we should give serious props to the likes of Creek, Rotel, Musical Fidelity, Arcam, Denon, and Parasound, all of which have made significant contributions to the musical aspirations of budget-conscious pilgrims. The Musical Fidelity A3 offered more liquidity and tube-like richness in the same signal chain. The C370's non-intrusive tone controls permitted supple, subtle adjustments without changing the overall tonal balance, though in so doing I became aware of a slight reduction in the retrieval of ambient information, at which the C370 more than held its own with its more expensive integrated brethren.

The chassis of the NAD C370 was hot after the usual one-hour preconditioning period at 1/3 power into 8 ohms, but, at around 55 degrees C, well within the bounds of safety. (The internal heatsinks were much hotter, of course, but these cannot be reached by inquisitive fingers.) The amplifier didn't invert signal polarity, and the maximum voltage gain (into 8 ohms) was a high 39.4dB. This can be seen in figs.7 and 8, which show FFT-derived spectra of the NAD's output while it reproduced a 50Hz tone at 1W and 10W, respectively, into 8 ohms. At the lower power level, an entire series of odd harmonics can be seen that effectively disappear at the higher level. Yes, even at 1W, the third harmonic—the highest in level—lies at -80dB (0.01%), with most of the other harmonics at or below -90dB (0.003%). But this still suggests a somewhat inadequate output-stage bias current.

Genesis Advanced Technologies was formed in 1991 to manufacture loudspeakers designed by industry veteran Arnie Nudell, who was responsible, with Cary Christie, for some of high-end audio's highest-performing models when both were at Infinity Systems. The company was acquired a few years back by Gary Leonard Koh and some of his friends, but Nudell remains with the company as Chief Scientist and the company has offices and a production facility in Seattle.
