Music in the Round #15 Records in the Round

In the past few installments of this column I've promised to talk about another subwoofer equalizer system. Now I'm going to pull the old switcheroo and discuss a different subwoofer EQ. The SMS-1 is a new, standalone digital equalizer system from Velodyne, based on the EQ built into their DD-series subwoofers. Larry Greenhill went gaga</A> over the Velodyne DD-18 in the June 2004 Stereophile, particularly because of the ease and sophistication of the EQ system. Apparently, one of the Velodyne sales guys asked the obvious: What about making the EQ available separately for use with other subwoofers?

Piotr Anderszewski Plays Szymanowski

I had a feeling Anderszewski would be remarkable in this repertoire. I was right. Since ordering this, I relistened to the two Martins in this repertoire to prepare myself. As expected, I prefer Mr Roscoe to Mr Jones, though I find both very good. Both play with passion, technical assurance, and enough exoticism to make the pieces come to life. Piotr Anderszewski is in another league altogether. To an extent, Anderszewski does for these works what Jerzy Semkow does for the great Song of the Night: he plays the music so that it is Szymanowski we hear.

MTT

An unusual recording this. Bruno Walter (CBS), Otto Klemperer, and Claudio Abbado (1999) are currently my reigning triumvirate in this work, all for different reasons, of course. Michael Tilson Thomas

The Sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti

Immediately below is a review I wrote about four years ago concerning Domenico Scarlatti's sonatas. A few months ago I relistened to all 555 sonatas and wrote some very brief descriptions of some highlights.

The Review

About three months ago I wrote of my elation at buying the 34-disc set of Domenico Scarlatti

Earth - if it didn't suck ... so, we exited the Turkey Festival the night before - a new record for dysfunctional achievement - some people ask for guidance purchasing stereo parts - relax, if there is any hope for your ears, the music will make you forget about the technical gossip before you even notice it exists ...
