I couldn't resist!! - I bought the Conrad Johson LV14L preamp

Well I did it. The CJ unit has found a new home. The deal from my dealer was just too good to pass up. It really wasn't that hard of a decision, especially since having the pre on demo loan for nearly a week. I was simply floored by how musical this piece is. Everything just took on a whole new dimension musically. I know I will be satisfied for quite some time now. My next move will be a CD player or maybe a DAC. What do you guys suggest? Budget around $1200. Thanks

Power, Passion and Beauty - A Review

Forums

There's a link to very detailed review of a brand new book called "Power, Passion and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra" wrtten by Walter Kolosky. The review is by John Kelman and it is on the All About Jazz web site. It is worth a read. In addition, there are some links to the Abstract Logix Books web site on the page that are also worth checking out.

Mounting Bookshelf Speakers around an LCD in a Tricky Spot - Help! :)

I have a tricky spot underneath a staircase where I've mounted an LCD TV. I'd like to mount my center channel, and left/right bookshelf speakers off the floor so I'm not wasting space (there are 2 rear channels as well) but I can't think of a good place to put them. The speakers are Jamo Center 18 and Jamo 28's (times 4). I've posted some photos of the space and speakers (below).

I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks for your help!

The Next Big Thing?

The Next Big Thing?

When I visited</A> NHT's manufacturing facility in early May, I was struck by a comment managing director Chris Byrne made when describing NHT's Xd loudspeaker, which employs sophisticated digital signal processing (DSP) for its crossovers and equalization functions. "You do realize that we could have never incorporated such complex slopes in a physical crossover," Byrne proselytized.

Telarc Scores Big

Telarc Scores Big

Classical music in general, and audiophile label Telarc in particular, scored big in this year's annual Outmusic Awards. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici, whose music has recently found an ardent champion in conductor Robert Spano, won Outstanding New Recording: Instrumental for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Telarc recording of Paul Revere's Ride. Telarc veteran and Grammy Award-winning producer Thomas C. Moore, who assisted in the recording, received the Outstanding Producer award. In addition, soprano Melissa Fogarty received Outstanding New Recording: Debut Female for Handel: Scorned & Betrayed (Albany Records).

Use of active line conditioner

Tripp Lite and others make an active unit that stay at 120v with 89v-140v inputs by auto selecting taps on a transformer. The units also have EMI and RFI filtering. Wouldn't these be preferable to filiter only units? They are very reasonably priced - especially compared to some of the filter only unit. Is there a downside? (Lastly - it seems to me it might add some protection from lighting?)
