On Hallowed Ground

On Hallowed Ground

Yes, it's the fifth anniversary of 9/11 and the media coverage is relentless. However, despite all the hoopla, the solemnity of the day can still sneak up on you—it happened to Jeff Wong and me this morning as we completed out daily bike ride and came upon a memorial service for firemen and policemen from our neighborhood who died that day.

An Excellent dvd

I've noticed that "Monster Cable" brought out a new, well,i wouldn't say format, rather a "way of recording" called "Super disc".Only 2 dvd and 2 cd are out.Out of curiosity,i ordered one,a dvd by "3 doors down".I didn't expect much, because usually these things are marketing gimmings.Imagine my surprise when i played it last night to find out that not only both audio and video are absolutely marvelous but the picture is in anamorhic (16x9) format as well. Worth a try guys !

Synchronicity...Big Mike (NFS Audio) 's birthday!

Hey hey, everybody!

Sam Tellig had Lars, I have Big Mike. If you've met me, you've met him.

His birthday is September 4th, but I always transpose my math and think it's the 10th.

He is one of the greatest people ever to walk the face of Hi Fi.

He has two tin ears, can't hear phase to save his life, can't detect burnt out tubes in his front end or burnt out capacitors in his back end, but dammit, he has yet to meet a piece of gear that he doesn't think needs to be modded before he's heard it.

Happy Birthday, Clifton!

Hey, buddy, thanks for living long enough to let mathematics know just how high numbers can go!

Dang, I remember you mentioned today, then I forgot. Woulda found a way to make more trouble had I not forgotten.

Dude, I wish you better than the best. I'm happy I can claim to know you, and I wish everyone else could have the pleasure, as well.

Bottom line (raising a toast of some fine Rhone from a vintage after your year of birth - otherwise I'd have had to dig it out of some clay pot) - I hope I live to be as old as you look.

All the best, amigo.

question for JA

Forums

john
this is a followup post to a question you answered in critics' corner over on audio asylum. regarding the lack of followup to the pass xa160 review, you said that pass never sent a 2nd sample and you didn't followup either. is it usual that stereophile will ask for another sample in such cases or do you leave it up to the manufacturer?

thanks, john

CEDIA 2006 Kicks Off September 14

CEDIA 2006 Kicks Off September 14

Even though the calendar year starts January 1 (or, if you're in the electronics industry, with the January CES), many of us still think of Labor Day as the beginning of the year. That's when school always started—or, again if you're in the electronics industry, the week after is when CEDIA's (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) Expo takes place. As the show has grown over the years, it has also become the kick-off to the important (and, hopefully, lucrative) end-of-the-year sales season, with many companies debuting significant products they hope will make their Q4 profitable.
